Croatian CW Contest and Russian RAEM CW Contest Participation

I participated two small DX Contest on this December--Croatian CW Contest on Dec. 18 and 19 and Russian RAEM CW Contest on Dec. 26. I enjoyed both contests at home in Amagasaki city, Hyogo, Japan.

I had only 8 QSOs in Croatian CW Contest. Acquired entities are BY,UN,UA,UA0,LY. I couldn't get 9A though we could hear signals from 9A.

And I had 28 QSOs in Russian RAEM CW Contest. Acquired entities are UA,UA0,UN,JA. I had difficulty in sending long long contest number--599+001+North Lat.and East Lat. I was repeated many times to give numbers. Contest rule says that we will be disqualified if there are more 2% miscopies of all QSO. I have possibility to be dropped of this contest...

In this season High band condition gets worse in Japan and it is very hard to have QSOs with DX stations with my poor facilities. But I'm very happy to have the opportunity of QSOs at home.

LZ DX Contest Participation

I participated the LZ DX Contest Phone between Nov.20 and 21 at home in Amagasaki city, Hyogo, Japan.

My individual result was totally 31 QSOs. I think it will be one of the best result at home because my home facilities are very poor. QSO entities was totally 17 as belows,

AS: JA,BY,BV,UA9,UN (5)
OC: DU(1)
EU: LZ,YU,9A,S5,YO,HA,SP,OE,YL,UA,UR (11)

I used YAESU FT-450M with 50w output, and I used ground plain antennas for 20m and 40m and dipole for 15m band set in the balcony on the 3rd floor of 8-story appartment house. All by CW QSOs, no SSB QSOs.

It seemed that participation of LZ stations is very little. I had difficulty to get LZ multi.

Next biggest contests are CQ WW DX Contest CW on November 27 and 28. I'll participate them as JO3PSJ/3 mobile station.

NA: K,VE (2)
SA: LU,CE,PY,CX (4)

Of them new QSO entity is only YJ Vanuatu. But this VJ st was non-contest st.

I used YAESU FT-450M with 50w output, and I used ground plain antennas for 15m,20m and 10m and dipole for 40m band.
Especially I could enjoy QSO with LU and PY stations on 10m band. I felt the situation of Cycle 24 is getting better.

Next biggest contests are CQ WW DX Contest CW on November 27 and 28. I'll participate them as JO3PSJ/3 mobile station.

RSGB IOTA Contest Participation

I participated the RSGB IOTA Contest between July 24 and 25 at Inami Town, Hyogo, Japan as the call sign JO3PSJ/3.

My individual result was 77QSOs, I acquired 22 entities: JA, HL, BY, BV, VR2, JT, UA0, DU, 9M6, KH2, KH7, YB, VK, ZL, UA, UR, SP, DL, GJ6, F, W, KL7, of them Gj6(Jerjey) and F(France) were my first QSO entities.
I got 25 IOTA codes in the world in this contest: AS007, AS012, AS018, AS020, AS031, AS078, AS117, AS131, AS137, AS138, AS151, AS155, EU057, NA235, OC006, OC019, OC021, OC026, OC036, OC042, OC088, OC117, OC130, OC142, OC146. I expected I would get more rare codes but it was so difficult.

I used ICOM IC-7000m 50w output, and I used these HF antennas for this contest: inverted V dipole 40m band, Rotary V dipole for 20m and 15m bands, 2-Elements Yagis for 15m and 10m bands.

Condition was comparably good during my operation. But I had no choice but stop operation for about six hours because car battery was dead and I couldn't start an engine of my car. It was a serious failure because I connected AC-DC converter with car battery directly, not with sigar sokect. In addition I used two lap-top computers. Maybe electric load was enourmous for battery.

I will participate TARA Grid Dip Contest and European HF Championship between August 7 and 8 for the next time. At the same days one of the biggest domestic contest "Field Day Contest" organized by JARL is held. Mainly I will join domestic contest.

IARU HF Championship

VY SRI for late renewal because I have been too busy to renew my blog.

I participated in the IARU HF Championship organized by IARU between July10 and 11 at Onomichi City in Hiroshima, Japan as the call sign JO3PSJ/4.

I used these HF antennas for this contest: inverted V dipole 40m and 20m bands, 2-Elements Yagis for 15m and 10m bands.

My individual result was 84QSOs, I acquired 25 entities: JA、HL、BY、BV、VR2、JT、HS、9M2、VU、DU、KH2、YB、ZL、UA0、UA、EW、UR、SK、OE、S5、YU、LY、W、VE、XE, of them VU(India) and SX(Greece) were my first QSO entities.
I had 14 HQ stations in the world in this contest:8N2HQ、8N1HQ、8N4HQ、8N8HQ(JARL)、B4HQ(China)、BV0HQ(Chinese Taipei)、 ZL6HQ(New Zealand)、R3HQ(European Russia)、 LY0HQ(Lithuania)、 OE1A(Austria)、SK9HQ(Sweden)、 S50HQ(Slovenia)、SX0HQ(Greece)、NU1AW(IARU).

Condition was comparably poor at my operation site. Especially, I seemed 21M band was like hell. I had difficulties to have a QSO even with neighbouring countries.

I considered this IARU Contest as preparation for the RSGB IOTA Contest which will be held between July 24 and 25. I will decide my strategic plan for the next contest according to the result of IARU Contest.

CQ-M International Contest

I participated in the CQ-M International Contest organized by Russian League between May 8 and 9.

I set my operation site on the shore of a big pond with Dipole for 40m and 20m bands, 2-Elements Yagis for 15m and 10m bands.

Compared with two DX contests held on March, Russian DX Contest and CQ WPX SSB Contest, CQ-M was very tough contest for me. Though I participated with almost the same facilities as on March, I resulted in only all 11 QSOs, the worst result on my individual record in DX contests. My final QSO entities are UA0, UA, UR, W, SP, LY and 5B.

The reason of failure will be many. At first it was because my facilities are very poor. But especially I didn’t understand the change of condition between March and May.
In Japan I could have QSOs with European stations in the evening in local time on the band of 20m and 15m on March. But it is now very difficult to have QSOs with European at the same time as on March because many domestic stations show up now.
In addition many of Russian stations are very strong and its number is so many. It is very difficult to win Russian big guns in pile-up fighting.

Next DX contest which in I’ll participate will be IARU HF Contest in July. I recognize this failure and will revise my contest plan in summer time.

Participation Report of CQ WW WPX Contest

I participated CQ WW WPX Contest March 27 and 28, 2010.

I operated as JO3PSJ/3 at Inami town, Hyogo, JAPAN at the same operation site as the last week’s two DX contests. My individual result was totally 195 from 42 entities in the world. Of them the newly acquired entities were 7,-- 9V(Singapore), EK(Armenia), XX9(Macau), HC8(Galapagos Is.), SJ(Sweden), 5B(Cyprus)、YI(Iraq). I had a QSO with YI2BBY station which has prefix of Iraqi stations. I cannot see his/her callsign in the QRZ.com and cannot confirm if it is true or fake Iraqi stations.

My antennas were Inverted V dipole for 20m, handmade 2 elements Yagi antenna for 15m. I didn’t make a QRV on low band and 10m band.

I finished improving handmade 2 elements Yagi antenna for 15m band and used it for the de fact first time. I checked appropriate width of elements with MMANA, antenna making software, in advance. Fortunately, the number of SWR was 1-1.5 in the whole range of band without hairpin matching.

Compared with dipole antenna, the performance of Yagi antenna is very excellent! I could have a QSO with stations in European Russia, Ukraine and Turkey in the early afternoon. On the second day I realized QSO with a station in Galapagos Islands. I enjoyed almost contest time on the 15m band.
But this antenna is very big! The width of elements is about 7m. Radius is about 5m! Place in which I build it is extremely limited. I will bring two antennas—Yagi and dipole—and choose appropriate one according to the space of site.

Participation Report of BARTG HF RTTY Contest and Russian DX Contest

I participated two biggest BARTG HF RTTY Contest and Russian DX Contest between March 20 and 21, 2010.

I operated as JO3PSJ/3 at Inami town, Hyogo, JAPAN. My individual result was totally 132 QSOs--53 QSOs for BARTG HF RTTY Contest, 76 for Russian DX Contest and 3 for off-contest. In spite of almost full participation, I couldn’t extend my previous results.

The number of QSO entities was totally 33—21 entities for BARTG HF RTTY Contest, 20 for Russian DX Contest and 3 for off contest. Of them the newly acquired entities were 5,-- 4X(Israel)、OM(Slovakia)、ER(Moldova)、UA2F(Kaliningrad)、ZS(South Africa). Especially, I realized QSO with a station in Africa for the first time.

My antennas were Inverted V dipole for 40m and 20m, Rotary V dipole RDE-15 by Radix and handmade 2 elements yagi antenna for 15m. Though I prepared wire antenna for 80m, I didn’t build it for the reason of bad WX. In addition, handmade 2 elements yagi antennas for 10m and 15m didn’t work well for the terribly strong wind.
Though I used handmade 2 elements Yagi for 15m band for the first time, I gave up it, to my regret, because the number of SWR was extremely high. I must improve it for next operation.

ARRL International DX Contest Phone and OPEN UKRAINE RTTY CHAMPIONSHIP

I participated two DX contests at home on this weekend--ARRL International DX Contest Phone and OPEN UKRAINE RTTY CHAMPIONSHIP.

About ARRL contest I had 12 QSOs with American stations, almost with Californian stations. The foreign stations are not allowed to have a QSO with W and VE stations in this contest. While I can't hear the signals of W/VE stations, I had no choise but wait for its appearance. I felt this contest isn't interesting for me because I can't reply for CQs from other foreign stations when the condition is very good.

About Ukrainean RTTY contest I finished in only 2 QSOs--both UA0 Asiatic Russian stations. My wave didn't reach Europe.

I understand good condition on the high band from the increzse of the sun spot number. But it is very difficult to have QSOs with foreign stations with poor facilities a home. But I got hopeful establishment because my wave emmitered from the handmade shortened vertical antenna reached America beyond the pacific.

OK4RQ from Czech, Djekuju vam!

This is a QSL card from OK4RQ station in Czech Republic.

I had a QSO with OK4RQ on Jan. 24 2010 in the BARTG Sprint Contest on the band of 40m RTTY.

It is also the first confirmation from Czech. Because I always missed QSO with OK stations in the previous contests though we can hear their strong signals, I'm very happy to accept confirmation now. Really it is very difficult to have QSOs with European stations in Japan.

Card design is very interesting! Maybe this man is OK4RQ?? His former occupation was policeman and now he is a pensioner. When I saw picture, I thought he is a sailor!!

In addition he gave me an additional card which was issued as OL9AMPER. This is a card for commemoration station of the international trade fair for electric devices.

These two children are S52DD's?? They are very cute!!

This is a QSL card from 9A5W station from Croatia.

I had a QSO with 9A5W on Jan. 24, 2010 in the BARTG Sprint Contest on the band of 40m RTTY.

This is the second confirmed Croatian stations. The previous confirmation was for a QSO on 17m band SSB.

An emblem which is designed on the center of QSL card is called "Shahobnica". It is also designed on the center of Croatian national flag as red-white lattice pattern. Maybe you will remember the football uniform of Croatian national team. Shahobnica is the national symbol of Croatia, which is used for a long history.

Shahobnica was banned to use during the time of the former Yugoslavia because this is the nationalistic symbol. After Croatia was independent of the former Yugoslavia in 1991, this emblem showed up again officially.

Maybe you will be surprised and thought why why when you read the Russian phrase "bolishoe Spasibo!" to the US station.
W6AFA is an immigrant from Belarus and he has the citizenship of the US. I send him my QSL card with a short letter in Russian. He wrote to me "Spasibo" on the card.

His card design is a sleeping Koala on the tree. Really I'm very happy to accept a card from which I can understand national symbol.

The second one is from VK2CZ station in the state of New South Wales.

I had a QSO with VK2CZ on Oct. 24, 2009 in the CQ WW DX CONTEST on the band of 15m.

Australian map which is devided into call areas is designed on his card. NSW belongs to VK2 area.

The third one is from VK8NSB station in the state of Northern Territory.

I had 2 bands QSOs with VK8NSB on Oct. 24, 2009 in the CQ WW DX CONTEST on the band of 15m and 10m.

His card design is his house and his shack. He has big towers in the yard. Really Australian house is very big!!

The fourth one is from VK6NC in the state of Western Australia.

VK6NC is operated by a club Northern Corridor Radio Group. I had 2 bands QSOs with VK6NC on Oct. 24, 2009 in the CQ WW DX CONTEST on the band of 15m and 10m.

Perth is one of the largest city in Australia which is located in the western edge of Australia Continent.

The last card from Australia is from VK6HZ station in the state of Western Australia.

I had a QSO with VK6HZ on Oct. 24, 2009 in the CQ WW DX CONTEST on the band of 15m.
His station is also in Perth, the same city as the previous VK6NC.

His card design is a view of Perth. Perth is one of famous sightseeing spot which is well known in Japan. When I see a photo of skyscripers beyond the bay, I understand Perth is very big city!

I caught his wave with mobile whip antenna. We can have QSO with neighbouring stations with such a small and poor facility.

CQ WPX RTTY CONTEST Participation Report

I participated CQ WPX RTTY CONTEST last Saturday and Sunday as JO3PSJ/3 in Inami Town, Hyogo, JAPAN.

My individual result was totally 177 QSOs. I'm afraid that it will be bottom class but I'm very sartified with it.

The number of QSO entities was totally 41. Of them the first emtities were 13,--G, EA, OH, EU, YO, ES, LY, YU, Z3, 4O, EY, TA, XE. I missed WAJA because I couldn't catch African stations but I finally had QSOs with YU(Serbia) and YO(Romania) which I always couldn't have QSOs in the previous contests.

My antennas were Inverted V dipole for 40m, Rotary V dipole RDE-15 by Radix and handmade Hentenna for 15m and handmade Hentenna for 10m.

To my surprise, I could have QSOs with many European and American stations on 15m and 10m bands in spite of off season. Recently I heard that the SSN(Sun Spot Number) is increasing and European and American stations show up. I must prepare for antennas at home.

The next contests which I will participate are Russian PSK(27 and 28 Feb.), Russian DX(20 and 21 March) and CQ WPX SSB(27 and 28 March).
CQ WPX RTTY CONTEST was very useful for researching participation of Russian stations and condition of high bands.

BH7JER from Shenzhen, China, Duo Xie!

This is a QSL card from BH7JER station in Shenzhen, China.

I had a QSO with BH7JER on Jan. 23 on the band of 40m before start of RTTY DX Contest when I checked SWR of vertical antenna.

IC-718, VU handy TX and his handamade antenna tuner?? are displayed in his QSL card. Maybe his field shack? He used IC-718 for QSO with me by 25W power. His signal was very clear in the west coast of Awaji Island. He wrote it was rainy at the time of QSO. It was very strong windy weather in my side. I think it is FB to write WX at the time of QSO!

LZ7J from Bulgaria, TNX FR FB QSL!

This is a QSL card from LZ7J station in Bulgaria.

I had a QSO with LZ7J on Nov. 21 on the band of 40m in the LZ DX Contest. LZ7J is LZ1KSP station's callsign for contest.
This is the second confirmed Bulgarian station. I'll give LZ7J a great thanks for having caught my very weak signal.

LZ7J's QSL manager is LZ1JZ station. I expect many DXers will know the name of LZ1JZ. LZ1JZ is one of the most famous QSL printing company in the world. LZ7J's QSL card is designed by LZ1JZ. I think it is very beautiful design and colouring.

I had a QSO with BG2STH on Jan. 23 on the band of 40m before start of RTTY DX Contest when I checked SWR of vertical antenna.

His card design is his snap photo while mobile operation. A style of mobile operation is the same as in Japan. BG2STH is really a Chinese gentleman!

Two Russian Stations UA0DC and RN0JJ, Bolishoe Spasibo!

These two QSL cards are from Far Eastern Russia.

The first one is from UA0DC station in Khabarovsk, another is from RN0JJ station in Amur Region.

I had two QSOs with UA0DC in RTTY DX Contests on the band of 40m on Aug. 30 and Sep. 5. He often participate DX contests of RTTY. I'd like to have QSO on other bands next time.

With RN0JJ I had a QSO on 80m band on Nov.21, 2009. I had much difficulty to talk with him because he repeated to me QRZ. I'm very happy to be confirmed.
According to his letter in Russian, he beams 2m antenna for Japan and is challenging to have DX QSO on 2m band. I'd like to have QSO with him on VHF band. Maybe we'll have chance to talk with him along the coast of Japan Sea.

This is a QSL card from BH7LY station in Guangdong, China.

I had a QSO with BH7LY on Jan. 23 on the band of 40m before start of RTTY DX Contest when I checked SWR of vertical antenna.

A man who is operating radio is BH7LY. I understand he is enjoying field operation. His using rig is FT-847??
In addition this station is operated by the Chinese Radio Sports Association. I guess ARDF is included in radio sports. ARDF is popular radio sports in Japan among young people.

Two Argentina stations LU6DU and LU1ALF, Muchas Gracias!

These two QSL cards are from Argentina.

The first one is from LU6DU station, another is from LU1ALF station. I had QSOs with both stations on the band of 15m in JIDX Contest held on 15 November, 2009.

I operated in the observatory which has a wide view to the east side. It was easier to have QSO with Latin America than with European stations because there are almost no obstacles between Japan and Argentina. On that day condition of high band was very good and I had QSOs with six Argentina stations including these two stations.

Two US stations NR5M and KT6YL, TNX FR FB QSL!

I will show you two QSL cards from the United States.

The first one is from NR5M station in Texas, another is from KT6YL station in California. I had QSOs with both stations on the band of 15m in CQ WW DX Contest held on 25 October, 2009.

NR5M's card design is many big antennas. That is a yard of individual house?? I imagined American house is very big!!

KT6YL's card is a wild bird. As callsign says, KT6YL is a YL operator. She sent me her photo which shows KT6YL was enjoying contest in her shack room. She is very beautiful woman and very good contester!

This station was operated by Germany peditioner DL2FAG station. He also operated 5W0KH station in Samoa on November.

Niue Island is IOTA code OC-040. I don't know how often we can have QSOs with Niue stations in their activities. I'm very happy to have QSOs in the opportunity of DX contest.

BARTG Sprint Contest Report

I participate BARTG Sprint Contest, one of the worldwide RTTY DX contest as JO3PSJ/3 in Awaji Island (IOTA: AS-117) on last weekend.

I had 35 QSOs in this contest between 1200UTC Saturday and 0015UTC Sunday about 12 hours. Though it is very small result because my mobile facilities are very poor, I'm satisfied to have had QSOs with several European stations.

My QSO entities are JA-4, BV-1, VR2-1, HS-1, ZL-1, W-3, VE-1, UA0-7, UA-4, UN-1, UR-4, 9A-1, S5-1, I-1, LZ-1, 4L-1, HA-1, OK-1. Especially, 4L(Georgia), HA(Hungary) and OK(Czech Rep.) are new acquired entities for me.

My rig output was 50W. I set 6mH inverted V dipole antenna for 40m band. I tried to set 8mH vertical but gave up it because it was very strongly windy weather.
In spite of very law antenna, I could have QSOs with several European stations. Maybe location in beachside toward west was very good.

I always feel RTTY QSO is very difficult. Especially, matching of PC output-interface-rig-antenna is very difficult so that ALC doesn't show up. Even if I succeed in matching, rig output will be reduced to half. I guess many of participants in RTTY DX contest have high power TX and big beam antennas.
Now I still must make more efforts.

I had a QSO with OE3DIA station on November 21, 2009 on the band of 40m in the LZ DX Contest in Hiroshima as JO3PSJ/4.

Austria is the sixth European entity for me. I always feel I have a QSO with European stations on the low band, so I'm very happy for big success.

Stable QSO with European station is my biggest subject. Now I'm looking for the best way.

QSLs via JARL Bureau

I received 625 QSL cards by way of our JARL bureau at the end of the last year.

Most of them are from domestic stations, 17 QSLs of all are from overseas stations--13 from Republic of Korea(HL), 3 from Indonesia(YB) and 1 from Saipan(KH0)(operated by Japanese pedition operator).
To my surprise, arrival from Indonesian stations was faster then I expected. QSL bureau of the Indonesian Federation(ORARI) sends to overseas bureau QSL cards quickly. I will send to our JARL bureau my QSL cards for Indonesian stations who don't request us to exchange cards directly.

I will introduce overseas stations whose QSL cards I received belows,

This is a QSL card from I4FYF station in Italy.

I had a QSO with I4FYF station on November 15, 2009 on the band of 15m in the JIDX Contest.

I missed to have a QSO with Italy station in the previous contest held on October. I'm very happy because I succeeded in a revenge and got confirmation.

His antennas are very big! When I see his big facilities, I guess it is very easy for him to catch my voice which was emitted from 50W transmitter and 4.5mH dipole. I want to have such wonderful antennas!

Italy is the 4th confirmed European entity except of European Russia. Europe became no longer far region for me. But it is more hard to send my voice to Europe on law band than on high band. I must improve antenna facilities for 40m band.

I had a QSO with HB9RDE station on November 21, 2009 on the band of 17m in Hiroshima as JO3PSJ/4. Because he beamed his antenna for JA, I could catch his signal very strongly.
Though I had only 6mH dipole antenna, he caught my signal for RS-41. I was very happy that my voice reached Europe.

Slovenia is one of small nation in Europe which was independent of the former Yugoslavia in 1991. I've been to Slovenia once in 2000. I had a good impression to Slovenia because of beautiful Alps view, high life standards and friendly people. Slovenia became a member country of European Union.

This station is very popular among DX chasers and I had much difficulty to establish QSO. But thanks to good locations on the hill in the small island, I realized QSO with a station from southern Pacific island.
In addition, I used split mode for the first time to have a QSO with 5W0KH.

I know that serious earthquake and Tsunami happened in Samoa last year. I hope that people's daily life is on reconstruction well now.

Main operator of 5W0KH was DL2FAG station in Germany. I give him a great thanks for FB QSO and QSL service!!

This is a QSL card from UN6P station in Kazakhstan.

I had a QSO with UN6P station on October 17, 2009 on the band of 40m in the JARTS RTTY DX Contest at home by RTTY mode.
Because I use an ineffective vertical antenna set on the balcony, I didn't believe that I succeeded in QSOs with Central Asian station.

UN6P station is operated by Mr. Yury, on the right on the picture. They are cousin??

Kazakhstan is a large nation in Central Asia which was independent of the former Soviet Union in 1991. I guess there are many active amateur radio stations in Kazakhstan because I have already had another QSO with Kazakh station.
But many station in Kazakhstan reccomend us to change QSL cards directly because they say QSL bureau of Kazakhstan Federation almost doesn't work well.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope you have many successes in 2010!

Last year I enjoyed DX-ing and having QSOs with many foreign station. I'm very happy to know them with the same hobby in the world.

I wish to have more QSOs with many station from unaquired entities in 2010.
In order to realize it, I have a plan to introduce new antennas. But I realized to have QSOs with stations on the opposite side of the globe like Argentina and Brazil with my poor facilities. I will search for possibilities for DX-ing with using my present facilities.

And I challenged many DX contests last year. I will participate more contests in 2010. I think contest is the goog opportunity to try my possibility and to get new entities.

This year falls on the third year for me since I started amateur radio in 2008. 2010 will be the year of challenge for me!

I'm looking forward to seeing you on the air!
